膜式空气弹簧的构造是在金属外筒与内筒，或缸筒与活塞之间安放橡胶膜，通过膜的变型成功实现整体伸缩。在外筒的内壁与内筒的外壁上预先给出合适的倾斜或球面，据此橡胶膜伸缩时可沿该壁面发发生灾难形，受压最简单的面或物体表面的大小随变型而变化。这就可以得到在定额高度下很软，而在大位移时变硬的尤其的性质，即合适的非线性弹性尤其的性质。膜式空气弹簧又分为约束膜式和自由膜式。
